Power, Love, and Self Control

"for God gave us a spirit not of fear but of power and love and self-control."

2 Timothy 1:7

We all will go through seasons of life that produce anxiety or fear. But we have options of how we let that manifest in our life outside of that season. We do that being in the midst of those seasons and remembering who are as Children of God.

When your mind is anxious or fearful, its filled with thoughts that capture every ounce of your energy. You don't even have brain space to think about anything else..or heck...to do anything else. But I promise that you can overcome it. This verse explains that God gives us power, love, and self control. Because of this, we are prompted to set our mind on how God sees us and who we are as His Children.

In an earlier blog, I talked about giants and how David stood against something he knew he didn't have the power to overcome alone. But when he called on the power of Jesus, he turned that fear to faith and conquered something that seemed impossible. In a situation where he could have instantly turned to his fear, he chose to believe that Our God keeps his Word and can conquer even the biggest of enemies. Over the course of Davids life, he had many opportunities to choose fear, yet every single he stood in the face of it, he choose faith.

In the same way, when we turn out thinking in these seasons of anxiety from fear to focus on the Truth of who Jesus is and says we are, just as Davids faith did, it can conquer all and move mountains.

We need to have weapons in our arsenal to fight with that faith when we are faced with it. Its our responsibility to build up those weapons by studying the word, praying, and having a fellowship with others who believe.

God gives us power:

Power to overcome fear

Power to overcome anxiety

Power to defeat negative self thoughts

Power to claim his healing blood over you

Power given to you by the sacrifice of Jesus Christ over your situation

God gives us love:

Love to show ourselves

Love to show others

Love to show tenderness and grace

Love to spread to those He puts in our way

Love to give our enemies

Love to speak over others when they do us wrong

Love to give back to the God who takes care of you

God gives us self control:

Self control to keep our minds straight in hard seasons of life

Self control to remind calm when we are faced with giants

Self control to take a deep breath and let the power, and love of Jesus spread over our situation

Self control to bind thoughts that are not of God

Self control to get in the Word of God and live it out

Self control to maintain your health

Self control to come to God with a heavy heart and open hands

Seek His truth even in the midst of these seasons of life. "Set your minds on things that are above, not on things of the earth" - Colossians 3:2

Reflect on todays verse:

"for God gave us a spirit not of fear but of power and love and self-control."

2 Timothy 1:7

1. In each of the Truths above (Power, Love, Self Control) choose one of each to hold onto today. Rehearse that Truth to yourself over and over again today. When you feel fear, anxiety, or doubt today or this week, remember that you have resurrection power, the love of our savior, and self control given to you by the Holy Spirit to drive your faith.

2. How is God speaking to you through this verse? What stands out to you the most?

3. Was there a lesson in this passage? How does it pertain to your life right now?

4. How do you feel God is using this passage to you move and grow you?

5. What are some steps you can take this week to embrace, and live out this truth?

Father,

Because of your son, I can live a life that refuses to give into the fear that used to plague my mind. Jesus, lead me through your peace today, Thank you for giving me your power. Help me to remember that I have authority over my situations. Thank you for your love. Help me to love like you today and focus on your truth. Thank you for giving me a mind of self control. Help me to practice more of this when the weight gets too heavy. Give me a clear mind. Give me a hear that is for you and no one one nothing else.

Amen
