Check Your Sight

“The eye is the lamp of the body. So, if your eye is healthy, your whole body will be full of light, but if your eye is bad, your whole body will be full of darkness. If then the light in you is darkness, how great is the darkness!"

Matthew 6:22-23

The "bad eye", "refers to an eye that cannot see the beauty of grace. It cannot see the brightness of generosity. It cannot see unexpected blessing to others as a precious treasure. It is an eye that is blind to what is truly beautiful and bright and precious and God-like. It is a worldly eye. It sees money and material reward as more to be desired than a beautiful display of free, gracious, God-like generosity. Make sure that you see heavenly treasure as infinitely more precious than earthly material treasure. When your eye sees things this way, you are full of light. And if you don’t see things this way, even the light you think you see (the glitz and flash and skin and muscle of this world) is all darkness. You are sleepwalking through life. You are serving money as a slave without even knowing it, because it has lulled you to sleep. Far better is to be swayed by the truth—the infinite value of God." - John Piper

When you hear is corrupted with greed, self pity, loneliness, or hate..your eyes follow in that direction.

The same thing can be told for how we see ourselves and our life. We have to live our lives through the God goggles, not worldly googles. Satan uses our eyes to gain entrance to our hearts.

In 2 Corinthians 7:14 Satan disguises himself as an angel of light to corrupt the minds of the people. To get them to think that what they were seeing was light, goodness, and holy.

Satan loves to get into our heads and make us believe the we have to have material things in order to be accomplished, successful, happy, or to live our best life. He blinds us to believing that THINGS will make us happier.

So my question to you also this...what types of things are you fixing your eyes on?

Are you constantly an Instagram scroller? Are you constantly looking at other women and wishing you had what they had? Are you watching movies, reading books, or listening to music that is making you fix your eyes on what is NOT important in the grand scheme of things? Is your sight blinded by the things you are constantly consuming? Maybe you are obsessed with the way you look...meaning you pick yourself apart every time you look in the mirror. Maybe you have trouble feeling beautiful because you look at other women and wonder why your body doesn't look like theirs? I know I'm guilty of all of these things.

But as soon as I decided to take a step back and put on my God goggles all of that darkness was revealed in my heart and I laid it at His feet. What a freeing feeling. Your eyes are opened to the things that are actually IMPORTANT and that will benefit both my walk and my well being.

So lets take our blinders off. Lets ask the spirit to reveal the things in our hearts and in our sight that is causing us to walk in darkness when light is just on the other side.

Reflect on todays verse:

“The eye is the lamp of the body. So, if your eye is healthy, your whole body will be full of light, but if your eye is bad, your whole body will be full of darkness. If then the light in you is darkness, how great is the darkness!"

Matthew 6:22-23

1. What things in your life can you pinpoint that are causing you to see darkness? What things have a stronghold on you that are keeping you from walking into the light? Things that may seem important to you...but are they important to God? Are they becoming an idol?

2. How is God speaking to you through this verse? What stands out to you the most?

3. Was there a lesson in this passage? How does it pertain to your life right now?

4. How do you feel God is using this passage to you move and grow you?

5. What are some steps you can take this week to embrace, and live out this truth?

Father,

Reveal to me the places in my heart that are holding me back from seeing the light. I know there are things I am holding onto that have no meaning in your Kingdom. Spirit reveal them to me so that I can throw them off and put on my God goggles. Change my sight so that I might see through the eyes of God. Protect my heart so that my eyes may see nothing but your goodness. Cast out the "bad eye" and make me new.

Amen
