Just a Mustard Seed

He replied, “Because you have so little faith. Truly I tell you, if you have faith as small as a mustard seed, you can say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there,’ and it will move. Nothing will be impossible for you.”

-Matthew 17:20

God has been teaching me a lot about the word Faith lately.

Ive been through a lot of seasons in my life, especially recently. Seasons of growth, fear, discomfort, triumph, patience, and rest. The thing about these seasons though, is that they are temporary.

If there’s one lesson I’ve learned through all of these changing seasons, its that faith is the only thing that never should.

You know how t-shirts have the saying "faith moves mountains"? Yeah..well I’ve been screaming that to the mountains in my way...and they eventually do move. But it’s not by my hand, or even the volume of my voice that moves them.

It’s the unshakeable Faith that I refuse to let go of.

What I think is so interesting in Matthew 17:20, is that it doesn’t say you need faith that’s bigger than the mountain. It doesn’t say you need faith that’s loud.

It says you need faith the size of a mustard seed. Because real power can whisper and get its point across.

God doesn't ask us to stand in front the mountains alone, with our own strength, our own might, and push it out of the way. He tells us that if we stand firm and rooted in the promise that nothing is impossible when God is at the forefront, then the mountain WILL move.

God is not a liar. He can't lie. He's incapable. So when His Word says that if you have the faith the size of mustard seed, and you say the mountain move, and it moves....it will. It has to.

But He also did say it would move suddenly. Its not always that easy.

Because I believe that mountains in our life, seasons that come and go, teach us something. And if we try to move the mountain too quickly, or we try to shuffle out of the wilderness and bitter cold too soon...we miss the purpose in the pain. We miss the blessing, the lesson, the growth opportunity that comes with it.

I believe that this is why Romans 5:3 says that "suffering brings perseverance; perseverance, character; and character, hope.

We always ask God to make a change in our lives. We always ask him to wake a way.

But what if the change he's trying to make starts in your heart. And what if he is already making a way.

Maybe the "way" is the fact that you are relying to heavily on your own strength to move the mountain. And all Gods asking you to do is take a step back, whisper your trust to him, and stand with open arms as his glory fills you.

Dont curse the mountains in your life. Be grateful for them, cause God moves even in valleys.

So believe this season is passing. Have radical faith. And unshakeable gratitude. And the mountain in your way WILL move.

Reflect on todays verse:

He replied, “Because you have so little faith. Truly I tell you, if you have faith as small as a mustard seed, you can say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there,’ and it will move. Nothing will be impossible for you.”

-Matthew 17:20

1. What areas of your life do you feel like theres a mountain in your way? Do you feel like you are trusting God fully through it, or have you been relying on your own strength? Take a look at your heart..is it full of faith, chasing after Gods heart, or is it constantly feeling bogged down and belittled by the size of the mountains in front of you?

2. How is God speaking to you through this verse? What stands out to you the most?

3. Was there a lesson in this passage? How does it pertain to your life right now?

4. How do you feel God is using this passage to you move and grow you?

5. What are some steps you can take this week to embrace, and live out this truth?

Father,

Thank you that all I have to have to see you move is faith the size of a mustard seed. Lord, you are so much bigger than my problems. And from here on out I will stop telling You how big my problem is, and start telling my problem how big You are. Give me patience as I watch Your grace move through this mountain. I can't wait to watch it fall Lord. Thank you for how deep, wide, and strong Your Love is for me.

Amen
